Please click for larger imageThe Cemetery is open every day in the year except 25th and 26th December for the purposes and at the dates and times set out below. The Cemetery is closed temporarily when there is a funeral in progress.

Because burials still take place and friends and relatives frequently pay their respects, visitors are expected to dress and behave appropriately. Pets can not be taken into the Cemetery; Recreational activaties such as picnicing, jogging, cycling, skating and smoking are not allowed in the Cemetery, but can be undertaken in Waterlow Park next door. In the interest of safety, please ensure
that children do not play or climb on monuments.

Office Hours

Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 5.30pm.

Grave Owners

The Cemetery is open to grave owners on presentation of a grave owner's pass at any time when the Cemetery is open.

East Cemetery

Open from 10.00am weekdays, 11.00am weekends.

Closing Time: 1st April - 31st October: 5.00pm (last admissions 4.30pm).

Closing Time: 1st November - 31st March: 4.00pm (last admission 3.30pm).

Admission is £3.00 per person which includes permission to take photos.
Photography is for personal use only. Video cameras and the use of tripods are not permitted. Please contact the office regarding arrangements for filming, professional or commercial photography.

There is no charge for children under the age of 16 when accompanied by an adult.

East Cemetery Tours There is a guided tour of the East Cemetery once a month, on the first Saturday of each month. Tours are about one hour in length, and are limited to 15 people. Tickets are sold at the East Cemetery gate on the day of the tour on a first come, first served basis. The tour cost of £5 includes entrance to the East Cemetery. People should gather at 2:15 P.M. for a prompt start at 2:30.

Western Cemetery

Admission to the West Cemetery is by guided tour only. We have tours all year. If you have a large group or a group with a with a special interest, you should consider our special tour described below.

Weekday tours: There is ONE TOUR at 2.00pm (guaranteed for 12-15 people). It is advisable to book by telephoning 0208 340 1834 and visitors are requested to arrive at 1.45pm

There are no week day tours in December, January and February. However, Special Tours can be arranged (see below).

Weekend tours: (for which there is NO BOOKING) take place each hour at 11.00am, 12 Noon, 1.00pm, 2.00pm, 3.00pm, and 4.00pm (last tour at 3.00pm from 1st November to 31st March) again guaranteed only for 12-15 people. It is advisable, especially in holiday seasons, to come at least half an hour before the scheduled time. Sundays are popular and it is sometimes not possible to accommodate everyone wishing to visit.

The West Cemetery tour charge is £5.00. This includes permission to take photos. There is a £1.00 charge for children between the ages of 8 and 16 when accompanied by an adult. Children under eight years old are not allowed on the tours, but are welcome in the East Cemetery.

Professional photography, video cameras and tripods are not allowed. Special arrangements can be made for commercial use or project work, photographic societies, publications and filming. Please call the office on 0208 340 1834 to discuss arrangements.

Special Tours

These are intended for groups of ten and more and can be made available on weekday mornings or on light evenings. They must be booked in advance. There is a non-refundable deposit of £100.00 and for every person over the tenth person there is a further charge of £10.00.

All Tours

Please note the following:

  • Average length of tour is one hour.
  • Surfaces are uneven and some of the tour is uphill. In particularly wet weather it is desirable to wear Wellingtons or similar footwear.
  • There are toilet facilities in the adjacent Waterlow Park and at the top of Swains Lane at Pond Square.

Grave Searches

If you want to to make an enquiry or check whether a relative is buried in Highgate Cemetery, write to the address below giving the full name and date of death of the person(s) concerned. Please also enclose a S.A.E. or International Postal Coupon and £10.00 sterling. Cheques should be made payable to Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust. With our reply there will be further information on the procedure to be followed if you wish to visit a grave.
